Liposuction

Liposuction, also called fat removal or fat suction, is performed to remove fat that has accumulated in different areas of the body. It should not be seen as a slimming or weight-loss operation. If you have fat that will not go away despite exercise and dieting, liposuction can be a good option for reaching the body shape you want.

What Is Liposuction and How Is It Performed?

There are two layers of fat under the skin. One, the superficial fat just beneath the skin, is affected by weight gain and loss; the other lies deeper, depends on genetic and structural factors and is not affected by weight changes. Usually after the age of 30, however much exercise and dieting one does, it may not be possible to prevent fat accumulating in areas such as the hips and buttocks. Dieting and exercise can hollow the face and empty the breasts while the fat on the hips remains. This can sometimes happen even in very young women; it is described as lipodystrophy, an uneven distribution of body fat. In such cases, removing fat from the problem areas with instruments called cannulas inserted under the skin is called liposuction. This procedure, a major development in plastic surgery, is widely used around the world.

The abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, arms, back and under the chin are the most commonly treated areas.

Dr Suleyman Tas patient results

Who is liposuction for?

It is used to shape the body in people who do not have a weight problem but cannot get rid of localised fat. It can be performed on people without serious health problems who are not pregnant and have not recently given birth.

What is the difference between laser lipolysis and liposuction?

In liposuction, fat is suctioned out of the body through cannulas. In laser lipolysis, fat cells are broken down with laser energy and cleared by the body over time.

How much weight is lost with liposuction?

Liposuction is not a weight-loss operation but a way to contour localised fat deposits, so the change on the scale is usually limited, around 1 to 2 kg.

Who is liposuction not suitable for?

Liposuction alone may not be enough for people whose weight frequently fluctuates or who have significant skin sagging.

How long does liposuction take?

It depends on the size of the area; larger areas such as the back and abdomen take longer. It usually takes 1 to 4 hours.

What should I pay attention to after liposuction?

To maintain the result, it is important to avoid weight gain and to continue a balanced diet and regular exercise.

When is the final result of liposuction visible?

Swelling and bruising resolve within 1 to 3 months. Because the skin takes about 6 months to settle, the final result is usually assessed at 6 months.
