Tummy Tuck

Several factors can cause excess fat and skin, sagging and deformity in the abdomen. Because this can be very bothersome, a tummy tuck is used to treat it. It can occur in both women and men but is especially common in women, because the abdomen stretches and shrinks during and after pregnancy and can become loose and saggy over time. A tummy tuck tightens the area to achieve the desired appearance, correcting sagging skin and removing excess fat.

How Is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

Before a tummy tuck an examination is carried out to assess the technique and the skin. An incision is made from the navel area down to the region of a caesarean scar and the skin is tightened. The navel is brought into a suitable position. In addition to correcting sagging and laxity, any excess fat is removed. Stitches placed on the abdominal wall fascia tighten the abdominal muscles, making a firm abdomen possible after surgery.

How Is a Mini Tummy Tuck Performed?

A mini tummy tuck is another effective way to treat excess in the abdominal area. It is used for patients whose abdomen is too loose for liposuction alone. A mini tummy tuck uses a shorter incision, and recovery after surgery is quite fast.

When is the right time for a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck should be done once weight loss has stabilised.

Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck does not prevent pregnancy, and pregnancy is possible once recovery is complete. However, sagging and stretch marks can return after pregnancy, so women planning to have children are advised to postpone the operation.

What is recovery like after a tummy tuck?

Patients stay in hospital for 1 to 2 days after a tummy tuck and are discharged wearing a special compression garment, which is worn for 1 month to help the abdomen settle into shape. Walking with help is possible 4 hours after surgery, and walking slowly on your own the next day. You can shower after 3 days and manage daily tasks without help. The stitches are not fully healed in the first week, so sneezing and straining can be painful. Unless your job is physically demanding, you can return to work after about 10 days.

How long does a tummy tuck take?

A tummy tuck takes about 3 to 3.5 hours on average, and up to 4 hours in people with a larger abdomen.

Can a tummy tuck be done a second time?

A second tummy tuck can be performed 1 year after the first; if fat removal is also wanted, only a limited amount can be removed.

Does a tummy tuck leave a scar?

The scar is hidden as far as possible in the body's natural folds and the underwear line, and it becomes less noticeable over time.

Can liposuction be done together with a tummy tuck?

Yes. If there is excess fat in the area, the two operations can be combined.
