Septorhinoplasty (Functional and Aesthetic Nose Surgery) in Istanbul

Septorhinoplasty is nose surgery in which a deviation of the inner wall of the nose (septal deviation) and problems with the outer shape are corrected in the same operation. The aim is a nose that both breathes comfortably and suits the face.

What is a deviated septum?

The septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that separates the two nostrils. It can be bent from birth or after trauma. A deviation can obstruct airflow and lead to one- or two-sided nasal blockage, mouth breathing, snoring and frequent sinusitis.

Who is it suitable for?

  • People with nasal blockage who are also unhappy with the shape of their nose

  • People whose nose became crooked after trauma and who have breathing problems

  • People with a septal deviation together with a dorsal hump or drooping tip

  • People who have had septum surgery alone but still have a shape problem

How is the operation performed?

Septorhinoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthesia and takes 2 to 3 hours depending on its extent. The deviated septum is straightened, the turbinates inside the nose are reduced if needed and the support of the nasal sidewalls is strengthened. In the same session the nasal bridge, tip and bones are shaped aesthetically. Cartilage taken from the septum can be used as a graft to support the nose. The technique may be open or closed; the decision is made at the consultation.

Recovery

A splint is placed on the nose after surgery and is usually removed within 7 to 10 days. In most patients silicone splints are placed inside the nose instead of packing. Easier breathing is felt from the first weeks as the swelling of the inner tissues goes down. Bruising and marked swelling decrease within two weeks; the final shape of the nose appears over several months to a year.

How it differs from septoplasty

Septoplasty is a functional operation that corrects only the deviation inside the nose and does not change its outer appearance. In septorhinoplasty, the outer shape of the nose is planned while the airway is corrected. For people who are happy with how their nose looks and only have a breathing problem, septoplasty may be enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does septorhinoplasty improve breathing?

If the breathing problem is caused by a septal deviation, enlarged turbinates or weak nasal sidewalls, these can be corrected in the same operation to make breathing easier.

How long does septorhinoplasty take?

The operation usually takes 2 to 3 hours.

Is nasal packing used in septorhinoplasty?

In most patients, silicone splints that allow breathing are used instead of classic packing.

When can I return to work after septorhinoplasty?

Most patients can return to desk work within 7 to 10 days, once the splint is removed.

Do I need septoplasty or septorhinoplasty?

If there is only a breathing problem, septoplasty may be enough; if there is also a shape problem, septorhinoplasty is planned.
