Facelift Under Local Anaesthesia in Istanbul

A facelift under local anaesthesia is performed by numbing the surgical area instead of using general anaesthesia, with light sedation when needed. The patient feels no pain during surgery but is not put fully to sleep. In suitable patients, a deep plane facelift and neck lift can also be performed this way.

How it differs from general anaesthesia

Local anaesthesia does not require a breathing machine, and effects of general anaesthesia such as nausea and grogginess are less common. Patients can usually get up sooner after surgery. On the other hand, for long, extensive operations or very anxious patients, general anaesthesia may be more comfortable. The choice is made by considering the extent of surgery and the patient's health together.

Who is it suitable for?

  • People who do not want general anaesthesia or want to reduce its risks

  • People whose general health allows surgery

  • People who feel they can stay calm during the operation

  • People planning a facelift with limited additional procedures

The day of surgery

Before surgery the face is marked and the plan is made. The anaesthetic is injected into the surgical areas with fine needles, and surgery begins once the area is numb. Depending on its extent, the operation can take 3 to 5 hours. The patient is monitored throughout and additional anaesthetic is given if needed. Most patients are discharged the same day or after one night of observation.

Recovery

Recovery is similar to a facelift under general anaesthesia. Swelling and bruising usually decrease noticeably within 2 to 3 weeks, and stitches are removed between 7 and 14 days. Because there is no grogginess from general anaesthesia, patients may feel more alert in the first days.
