Rhinoplasty for Thick Nasal Skin in Istanbul

Thick, oily nasal skin is one of the factors that most affects planning and recovery in rhinoplasty. Thick skin limits how visible changes to the underlying cartilage and bone will be from the outside, and it makes swelling last longer. In thick-skinned noses the goal is therefore a realistic shape that the skin can carry, with strong structural support.

Why does thick skin need a different approach?

In thin skin even small changes to the cartilage are clearly visible. In thick skin, the skin acts like a cushion over the underlying structure. If the tip is reduced, the skin may not shrink to the same degree, which can leave a round, poorly defined tip. In thick-skinned noses the aim is therefore less to reduce the tip and more to strengthen the framework so that it stretches the skin and gives definition.

Planning and techniques

  • Building a strong framework with cartilage grafts that support the tip

  • Positioning the tip to gain projection

  • In suitable patients, carefully thinning excess fatty and fibrous tissue under the skin

  • Avoiding over-reduction and choosing proportions that suit the face

Skin care before and after surgery

For oily skin with large pores, skin care and dermatological treatment can be planned before surgery if needed. After surgery, taping, regular check-ups and, in suitable patients, additional treatments can be used to control swelling. This is managed under medical supervision.

Recovery and swelling

In patients with thick skin, marked swelling decreases in the first weeks, but residual swelling, especially at the tip, can take 12 to 18 months to resolve. Patience and attending check-ups are therefore important. The final result appears later than in patients with thin skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a thick-skinned nose be made smaller?

The nose can be reduced, but the skin's ability to shrink is limited. The goal is therefore not over-reduction but shape created with a strong framework.

How long does swelling last with thick skin?

Marked swelling decreases in the first weeks; swelling at the tip can take 12 to 18 months to resolve completely.

Can thick skin be thinned?

Skin thickness cannot be changed completely; in suitable patients the tissue under the skin can be carefully thinned.

Are cartilage grafts needed for thick skin?

In most patients, cartilage grafts are used to support the tip.

Is the open or closed technique preferred for thick skin?

The technique depends on the structure of the nose; the open technique is often preferred when extensive tip support is needed.
